What are affirmations?
Affirmations are positive statements that can help you challenge negative thoughts and feelings, and create a more positive mindset. Affirmations are short, encouraging statements that you can repeat to yourself to help you feel more confident, valued, confident, patient, or whatever emotion or characteristic that you find yourself needing more of or just missing all together. Affirmations can help you: Boost self-esteem Drive motivation Address specific goals Enhance overall well-being Make space for your feelings while also calling on your ability to get through them. Affirmations can help rewire your brain through neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to adapt to new situations. When you write or speak self-affirmations, you subsequently make positive, healthy, life choices and even feel a larger and stronger sense of self.
Why having a positive mindset matters
Affirmations are important because they can help you combat negative thoughts, build self-confidence, and cultivate a more positive mindset by actively replacing negative self-talk with positive statements. This all leads to improved mood, reduced stress, and increased motivation to achieve your goals and responsibilities. Essentially, affirmations act as a tool to rewire your brain towards a more optimistic perspective. An optimistic perspective is important because it can significantly improve mental and physical well-being by fostering resilience in the face of challenges, promoting positive problem-solving, reducing stress, enhancing motivation, and generally leading to a happier and more fulfilling life. A positive mindset and an optimistic perspective allow you to see opportunities and potential solutions rather than dwelling on negativity. This improves your physical and mental health, including reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, which can help you live longer, and reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic illnesses. A positive mindset can also help you build stronger connections with friends, family, and colleagues, which means a more positive and supportive environment for you. It also increases your positive emotions which improve your cognitive function, and who couldn’t use better cognitive functioning!? A positive mindset can also help you appreciate the good things in life and find joy in everyday experiences, which is a necessity for every mom given how many challenging moments in the day motherhood can present.
How a positive mindset and an optimistic perspective will help you be a better mom
All of these great benefits of having a positive mindset and an optimistic perspective helps prevent and fight mom burnout, which is a crucially indispensable necessity for moms. It’s just so important for moms to combat Mom burnout! Mom burnout is distressing and awful for all parties involved and has so many negative consequences that could potentially be devastating. Some results of mom burnout can be chronic exhaustion, irritability, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, feelings of isolation, and decreased productivity for mom. There are also physical symptoms that may show up for mom like headaches, anxiety, and depression. Mom burnout strains moms’ relationships with her children, her partner, and her family and friends, and may cause her to neglect her self-care needs, which will ultimately impact both her mental and physical well-being. In more severe and extreme situations it can lead to chest tightness, hair loss, inability to find any joy in parenting, using food, drugs, or alcohol to cope, having mom rage, extreme feelings of inadequacy as a mom, loss of motivation, suicidal thoughts, escape ideation, loss of stress tolerance, conflict tolerance, or problem solving abilities, and increased frequency and intensity of conflict between parents.
How to incorporate affirmations into your day
You can recite and repeat affirmations to yourself whenever you want, such as while brushing your teeth, while driving, before bed at night, first thing in the morning before you see or talk to anyone or start doing anything for anyone, while you’re drinking your morning drink, or when you go for a walk. You choose whenever works best for you! You can pick one to focus on each day multiple times throughout the day, or just once or twice a day. You can have a dedicated list of affirmations that you’ll go through and say to yourself out loud everyday for a certain time period that you determine, or until you start to feel the effects of it. You can even refer to your list and recite different ones throughout the day. You can focus on saying the same one every single day or a different one each day. Whatever you need to embrace and face your motherhood journey with grace, flexibility, a positive mindset, and a realistic approach.
